Eco-explorers

In this recorded professional learning session, Greta Dromgool and Ben Moorhouse from the Department of Conservation unpack conservation education and:

  • introduce some exciting DOC resources aimed at getting students of all ages learning about, in and for the environment

  • share engaging, easy to implement activities that support an inquiry approach and incorporate the nature of science

  • facilitate discussion about the opportunities and challenges of working in the environment and provide information to support hands-on conservation education.

Great resources to use in the classroom.

Related content

The Science Learning Hub has an abundance of resources related to conservation and ecology.

If you would like more support with inquiry in the classroom, have a look at our webinars Diving into inquiry with whio and Inquiry outside the classroom. If birds or invertebrates are an interest, our activities Conserving native birds – unit plan, Observing earthworms and Building homes for tree wētā might be what you are after. The podcast Snippets about conservation education by Ben Moorhouse provides some excellent information about environmental education.

Help with planning

The interactive Planning pathways using native tree resources groups Hub resources into key science and teaching concepts. It provides a selection of pathways that allow for differing approaches and starting points to assist educators with their planning of lessons and units of work.

Useful links

The Department of Conservation has a range of excellent resources available. In this webinar, we discuss the resources Exploring your local environment, Experiencing birds and Experiencing invertebrates. The full collection can be found here.

Other useful sites to have a look at include the Landcare Research Garden bird survey and iNaturalist NZ – Mātaki Taiao.

Connecting with Nature to Care for Ourselves and the Earth highlights the most current and compelling evidence for connecting people with nature.

Acknowledgement

This webinar is another great collaboration between the Department of Conservation and the SLH and was produced with funding from DOC.
