Types of resources on the Science Learning Hub
This video gives a brief overview of the many kinds of resources on the Science Learning Hub and how you can use them.
Transcript
The science articles on the Science Learning Hub Pokapū Akoranga Pūtaiao are concise packages of information. They're written for teachers, but accessible for students too.
Classroom teachers will appreciate that these resources cover Aotearoa New Zealand science set within an Aotearoa New Zealand context. Whether it's literacy, water catchments, space flight, plants and wildlife, or anything else on the Hub – you'll find examples from here in Aotearoa.
If you click Glossary or hover over any underlined term, you'll find the key science terminology unpacked so you can gain an understanding of the science to share with your students.
The media in each article are just as valuable as the words. Let's see some of the types of media that articles might contain.
The first piece of media is an image. Our images are curated to provide information and start discussions in the classroom. If you click 'See more', there's information about the image, including how to use and reference Hub media, which can be useful for students. You can also find this information by clicking Copyright at the bottom of any page on the site.
Scrolling down, you can see a video. We have around 2,000 videos on the site, most of them created in-house for the Hub. If you click 'See more', you'll usually find a transcript with key science terms once again underlined to help unpack the clip. Our videos show Aotearoa New Zealand scientists as real people at work in the lab and in the field. They let our scientists explain complex science concepts in their own words.
Next down the page, we have an interactive. We have different kinds of interactives where students can test their science knowledge, simulate science processes, or find information and media organised visually.
Further down, we have a list of activities. These are downloadable Word documents outlining hands-on projects you can undertake with your class. They're a great way to make science learning tangible for students. You are able to adapt the documents to suit your class.
Another resource type is Teacher PLD. These are designed specially for educators to support teaching science. We have articles on planning and pedagogy and an extensive collection of video webinars.
Slideshows are another resource type, which collects information and images in an easily digestible format. Almost every PLD webinar has its own slideshow with many others besides.
Finally, there's Citizen science. These resources offer ways for educators and students to join projects in Aotearoa and around the world. In our Citizen science section, you can browse projects by topic or filter by which of the science capabilities are being engaged.
