Pollination role-plays

In this activity, students make small finger puppets and take on the roles of insects, birds and the wind to simulate various methods of pollination.

By the end of this activity, students should be able to:

  • recognise a few of the characteristics of flowers pollinated by wind, insects or birds

  • identify one of the rewards that a pollinator might receive

  • identify one plant that uses wind as a pollinator.

Activity ideas

Literacy is a strong feature in the Pollination pairs activity – students are asked to matching native flowers with their pollinators.

Introduce students to some of the science ideas and concepts relating to pollination with the Pollination (lower primary) – unit plan. It is suitable for students working at NZC levels 1 and 2.

See for lower primary students. It uses our pollination resources and the NZC levels 1 and 2 resources in Seeds, stems and spores – introduction.
