Celebrating Mother’s Day 2026 – with science!

10 May 2026 - 10 May 2026

Region(s): Nationwide

Type(s): promotion

Mums are special. Why not make her day with science! (If you are really clever, you’ll keep some of these ideas and make her year with science!)

Mother’s Day food ideas

  • Our Sweet as science Pinterest board has some great sugar-based edibles

  • Making lava fudge combines chocolate and geology (but is chocloate good for you? – we think a special treat won't hurt)

  • For a savoury food idea you could create a cheesboard – explore cheesemaking

  • Home-made marinades will help make a tasty Sunday dinner

  • Served with a fermented drink, of course

  • Try out the hidden science of breakfast in bed with The chemistry of croissants.

Not your usual gifts

  • Adopt a star at Space Place or Stardome

  • Science-based home-made gifts

  • The Science Learning Hub's Science gift Pinterest board

  • A poem based around her interests, for inspiration why not listen to Dr Robert Hoare reading his poem about the native moth (Houdinia flexilissima) in Fred the Thread – a poem.

Mother’s Day experiences

  • Celebrate the 'star' in your life with a trip to Stardome (Auckland) or Space Place (Wellington)

  • High tea at Zealong or a homemade Tea tasting experience

  • A day’s walk to an eco-sanctuary like Zealandia or Orokonui

  • Mother’s day fun at Butterfly creek

  • Bad weather? Visit one of Aotearoa New Zealand's wonderful museums, such as Te Papa, Te Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum & Gallery, MOTAT or Tūhura Otago Museum.

  • Look out for special Mother's Day offers, such as mum's go free at SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton's Aquarium.
