What does Karen love about her work producing natural skincare products?

Transcript

Wellington College: Do you enjoy making cosmetics?

Karen Farley: I love developing products. I love doing the research into the ingredients and working with people who actually do the stirring and mixing - it is actually a bit like a huge sort of cake factory - and trying out different things and finding out what works.

And the great thing is, the people are so positive … the positive energy, really, about being involved in a natural skincare company where I’m often talking to my customers on the phone and they’ll have excellent feedback or be happy.

I had a woman down in Wellington, for example, who actually had got eczema on her eyelids and tried lot of different skincare ranges and was so happy that her mother had got sent a sample of our skincare and she thought, ‘Ooh, I’ll try that.’ And her eczema has cleared up.

I mean, I’m not saying my product will do that for your skin, but it just makes you feel very good when you can have a great rapport with your customers, and you find that what you’re doing is actually beneficial to them.

We’re starting off small. And I think that’s a very important thing for all of you when you go out in your life and you set up businesses or whatever you’re going to do. It’s best to have a great vision, but start off small, and really enjoy whatever you do.

Find what it is your passion is and really enjoy that.
