Introducing our Lux collaboration with School Kit
The Science Learning Hub Pokapū Akoranga Pūtaiao is joining with School Kit to create Lux – a space for science education conversations.
The Science Learning Hub launched in 2007 with the logo Sparking fresh thinking. It was a bold step to make examples of New Zealand science, technology and engineering more accessible and visible to the education community. School Kit launched a few years later with the goal of helping teachers by providing free, innovative, challenging physical resources and designs and delivers classroom programmes nationwide. School Kit runs the largest active professional community of teachers in New Zealand.

LUX – lighting the way for science education
The Science Learning Hub Pokapū Akoranga Pūtaiao and the School Kit Squad have collaborated to create a digital platform for educators.
A shared ethos and a shared platform
School Kit provides private, dedicated spaces where teachers connect, share and support each other. The School Kit Squad (community) includes over 15,000 Aotearoa New Zealand classroom teachers.
The Hub works in a public space – offering free resources and regular professional development to our 357,000+ New Zealand users.
With our shared ethos, the Hub and School Kit are coming together to create something bigger – a dedicated digital platform to support Aotearoa teachers.
Introducing Lux | Shining the light on science
We’ve collaborated to create Lux | Shining the light on science – a space where we can shine a light on science and science teaching.
When the Hub team begins a new work programme the question, “Why?” is always on top for us. What is our ‘why’ for creating this space? We’ve huge respect for educators in Aotearoa and we recognise that change has been the one constant over the last few years. We’re also aware of the great work others are doing in the education environment – working together with shared kaupapa just makes sense!
School Kit has established professional online communities in reading and writing, so science seems a very natural fit. Our plan is to populate this space with bite-sized posts celebrating science champions, recommending podcasts and local events, thoughts to inspire and challenge your thinking alongside opportunities to connect and learn together.
The Lux platform will host our webinars. They will still be free, and we will continue to record, edit and upload the webinars to the Hub for viewing in your own time. Our promotion and registration processes remain the same but the live streaming of our webinars will move to School Kit’s platform. We will provide additional information on webinar access when you register and in the article Introducing our PLD.

The LUX space in School Kit
The Science Learning Hub Pokapū Akoranga Pūtaiao has a members-only space for Aotearoa New Zealand teachers to share ideas and resources. It’s free to join and use.
Come join us!
If you are a teacher, SLT or school staff member at a school in Aotearoa sign up to School Kit and the Lux Space by using this link. If you are already a member of the School Kit Squad – there will be a message pop up that will advance you straight through to land within the Lux space. We look forward to the discussions, sharing and connections within Lux. As with all of our Science Learning Hub Pokapū Akoranga Pūtaiao mahi, the Lux space is free to use.
Lux – something for the science fans
Another why question – why Lux? In science, lux is an SI (International System of Units) derived unit of illuminance in photometry. Illuminance, in turn, describes how bright a surface illuminated by a source will be.
We’re excited to light the way for science education and to connect with classroom teachers!
