Swan plant

A swan plant in a garden with a monarch butterfly.

Monarchs lay their eggs on swan plants. As the caterpillars eat the leaves, they ingest chemicals called cardiac glycosides. Birds or other animals that eat the caterpillars become sick and vomit.
