Pātaka kai

Pātaka kai – small Māori building for food storage.

The pātaka kai is a structure purposely built for food storage. The structure was adorned with specific whakairo designs that symbolised the abundance of kai and resources for the iwi.

For a closer look at the patterns, the British Museum has this image with a zoom in function.
