Kairau – tunnelling mud crab

Small, young crab in estuarine mud next to its hole

Kairau are a common sight in the estuaries of Aotearoa New Zealand. Juvenile crabs are grey – similar in colour to their muddy habitat. Older crabs are orange/yellow in colour.
