Metabolic bone disease

A kākā chick in a next box with metabolic bone disease.

This kākā chick has metabolic bone disease. This disease leaves kākā with distorted limbs and bone abnormalities, including a crossed beak, as seen here. Birds with this disease usually have to be euthanised. It can be easily avoided by not feeding kākā ‘human food’.
