24 February 2026 - 24 February 2026
5:30 pm start
Region(s): Otago
Type(s): presentations
Previously wiped out from the mainland, pakake/New Zealand sea lions have been breeding on Otago and Southland shores for over 30 years. In this free talk, postgraduate researcher Hanna Maria Ravn, from the Department of Marine Science, University of Otago, will dive into the stories, myths, and science connecting us to a returned taonga species.

New Zealand sea lion (Phocarctos hookeri)
While pakake, sea lions, have been harvested in the past, modelling shows that this slow-reproducing species cannot be hunted sustainably.
Amid both opportunities and challenges, how can we ensure a future where humans and pakake live side by side?
Location: Ombrellos Kitchen and Bar, 10 Clarendon Street, Dunedin
