Hovering over all of these spaces are the tūī. These birds fly across awa and roto, along coastlines and can also occupy spaces in wetlands. They are found in our cities and amongst native bush blocks along ranges and mountains.

  • Wild Wings Gallery Gallery Trail: Check out the Wild Wings Gallery Trail and journey from forest to coast in search of New Zealand's native birds!Hunt through the Museum and follow the clues.

  • Spread Your Wings Makerspace: At the famous Makerspace get creative with some crafts! Everything is provided to make a camera and a bird wall hanger, or to colour in to your heart's content.

  • Avian Illustration Workshops: These fun and educational workshops invite tamariki to explore the beauty of Aotearoa’s native birds through art. Learn how to draw a variety of bird species – from the towering giant moa to the mysterious morepork, and many more in between! Note all materials are supplied, but there are limited spaces available and limited dates.

  • Garden Birds: A View Out Your Window: 1pm, 1 October, free talk with Tūhura Otago Museum's Natural Science Collections Manager, Cody that will help you become an avid birdwatcher out your kitchen window.  

  • Kids' Bird Quiz: 2 pm, 1 October, a trivia event open to all ages, but specially designed for kids ages 6–12. Come ready to learn, laugh, and maybe even win a prize!

  • The Mystery of the Giant Birds: 3–4 pm, 1 October, this fascinating documentary tracks the rise and fall of moa and elephant birds, exploring their origins, adaptations and eventual extinction.

  • Bird Feeder Workshop: 4 OCtober, bookings essential. Bring the beauty of Aotearoa New Zealand’s native birds right to your backyard with a handmade macramé bird feeder!
