6 pm start
Region(s): Otago
Type(s): presentations
In this free talk Libby Manning, a guide and educator at Ōtepoti Dunedin’s Royal Albatross Centre, presents a firsthand account of sailing the notorious Drake Passage and exploring the Antarctic Peninsula aboard the 1911 Dutch tall ship Europa.
As part of the Antarctic Heritage Trust’s Inspiring Explorers Expedition™, Libby joined a crew of young New Zealanders retracing the journeys of early Antarctic explorers.
In this engaging talk, she reflects on the realities of crossing one of the world’s most unpredictable stretches of ocean, where conditions range from the placid “Drake Lake” to the treacherous “Drake Shake”, and the awe-inspiring landscapes that await beyond. With a particular focus on seabirds, Libby shares insights from her journey, connecting her work in conservation with the extraordinary wildlife encountered in one of the most remote regions on Earth.
Location: Barclay Theatre, Tūhura Otago Museum, 419 Great King Street, Dunedin.
