‘Race’: how a discredited science still shapes our daily lives

03 December 2025 - 03 December 2025

6–6:30 pm

Region(s): Nationwide

Type(s): presentations

Charles Darwin once identified 223 different racial categories, including the ‘morose aborigines of South America’, people who once ‘lived in the caves of Belgium’ and 'light-hearted, talkative negroes.’ Even though the science of ‘race' has long since been discredited, the word itself remains part of our everyday language.

In this free presentation, Professor Richard Shaw explores how our use of the term ‘race’ shapes the ways in which we see the world.

Chaired by Professor Leonel Alvarado.
