Precisely Tuned Māori Genomics – He Kākano: The Aotearoa Variome Project
30 September 2025 - 30 September 2025
5.30 pm start
Region(s): Otago
Type(s): presentations
This month's Thirst for Knowledge free talk is being given by Professor Stephen Robertson, Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Otago.
While great strides are occurring to bring genomic tools into different branches of healthcare, many of the instruments are tuned using European and Asian genomic data. Evidence suggests that populations whose genomes are understudied in genomic science are under-served by medical genomics and are at risk of under-diagnosis, misdiagnosis and even treatment harms.
Guided and governed by Māori experts in tikanga and Māori ethical frameworks, Stephen and his team have prospectively assembled a resource that reflects genomic variation across modern day Māoridom and that will bring precision to genomic healthcare for people with Māori ancestry while not threatening their cultural safety.
Location: Ombrellos Kitchen and Bar, 10 Clarendon Street, Dunedin
