Collected and Classified: Biology in a Box
21 April 2026 - 21 April 2026
6:00–7:30 pm
Region(s): Auckland
Type(s): presentations
Two new New Zealand books re-examine how we learn about the world around us. Case Studies: A Story of Plant Travel and The Collector: Thomas Cheeseman and the Making of the Auckland Museum look at how specimens ended up far from home.
How does 'collecting' affect the environment and relationships? How do we categorise and name things? How does 'science' perpetuate or challenge assumptions about the natural order?
Join in to hear an artist, a historian and a curator discuss such gnarly questions with noted publisher Nicola Legat. There will have books to borrow or buy.
Guest speakers include art historian Andrew McKay, floral artist/gardener Felicity Jones, and Auckland Museum invertebrates curator Leilani Walker.
