The future of travel, the design of roads, how to make journeys safer and the speeds we drive at are all topics supported by a virtual field trip in Term 3.
The LEARNZ team of professional educators will take an in-depth look at the design thinking that underpins our transport system.
To prepare for this field trip, LEARNZ content will support inquiry into:
- New Zealand roads
- people as road users
- roads and roadside design
- vehicles on our roads
- the speeds we drive at
- road safety
- a holistic safe system approach to designing roads
- the effects of technology
- the Waikato Expressway
- the future of travel on our roads
During this field trip you will:
- follow Shelley's tweets on twitter
- unpack typical journeys - getting to school, commuting to work, going to the beach
- visit Putaruru College and get the back story to their award-winning road safety video
- inspect the Waikato Expressway, designed with a safe system approach
- inspect an existing road that has been upgraded to make it safer and find out how local citizens influenced the solutions
- explore Hamilton's safe speed zones demonstration project
- put questions to experts about traffic psychology
- use the driving simulator at Waikato University
- find out how research informs roading design
- meet a transport engineer
- explore the implications of future vehicle technology
After the field trip, challenge yourself to:
- look at your local roads with a safe system view
- keep informed about self-driving vehicles
- investigate study options and careers in the transport industry
