Science Journalism Awards 2025

21 February 2025 - 07 April 2025

Region(s): Nationwide

Type(s): competitions

Celebrate your favourite science story of the year! Nominations are now open for the second annual Science Journalism Awards.

The Science Media Centre want to hear about your favourite piece of Aotearoa New Zealand science reporting from the past 12 months.

The awards were created to celebrate excellent reporting on science-related topics across all forms of media, by shining a spotlight on journalists based in Aotearoa or stories published in local outlets.

Two awards are available to recognise achievement across different career stages: one for established professionals and one for emerging journalists.

Last year’s finalists covered topics like the myopia epidemic, traditional tatau, tobacco industry lobbying, and weight loss surgery.

Nominate a piece for the 2025 awards here: www.sciencemediacentre.co.nz/awards/#apply.

Any piece published between 1 April 2024 and 31 March 2025 inclusive is eligible.

Journalists are allowed to self-nominate one piece of their own.

Get your nominations in by 7 April. The winners will be announced at the Science Journalism Awards event in June.

Nature of science

Developing an understanding of the nature of science, specifically the communicating in science strand of the New Zealand curriculum, helps students understand, analyse and evaluate scientific text. These skills will help students distinguish good science from bad science and non-science.
