This free online event will feature the two following presentations.

Making sense of visual representations in science contexts

Maurice Cheng, The University of Waikato

This presentation gives an overview of how research into visual representations are relevant to the New Zealand science curriculum. Cheng will discuss affordances and limitations of visual representations as compared with verbal representations. Implications for the New Zealand science curriculum for citizenship will also be discussed.

Weaving a web of connections through online citizen science

Cathal Doyle, Dayle Anderson, Markus Luczak-Roesch, Victoria University of Wellington and Cathy Buntting, The University of Waikato

Online citizen science (OCS) projects use the Internet to bring together professional scientists and volunteers to work together on real-world science investigations. In this presentation, presenters will draw on experiences from two TLRI-funded projects investigating the impacts of effectively embedding OCS projects within school science programmes. Specifically, focusing on the web of connections that have been weaved throughout these projects, which have brought together teachers, education researchers and information systems researchers from multiple organisations.
