Dead Precious! An exhibition of 50 New Zealand fossils is touring museums across New Zealand until 2010.
The exhibition features 50 New Zealand fossils ranging in age from less than one million years to 500 million years old. Many of the fossils are marine in origin, reflecting New Zealand’s watery past.
The fossil exhibition was launched in October 2007, and will tour nine museums from now until 2010:
Puke Ariki, New Plymouth – October 2007-February 2008
Rotorua Museum of Art and History – March-May 2008
National Aquarium of New Zealand, Napier – May-June 2008
Southland Museum and Art Gallery, Invercargill – July-August 2008
Otago Museum, Dunedin – September-December 2008
Canterbury Museum, Christchurch – December 2008-April 2009
The Nelson Provincial Museum – from May 2009
Te Manawa in Palmerston North – 2010
Te Papa, Wellington – 2010
The exhibition includes rare fossils from the extensive collections of GNS Science and Otago University. Some of them will be seen publicly for the first time.
GNS Science owns the exhibition and Shell NZ is the main sponsor.
