The Hub has lots of new resources and free PLD to support environmental knowledge and care for te taiao.
Matariki and Environment Aotearoa 2022
We continue to build our suite of resources that use the Matariki star cluster as a framework to explore the state of our environment. Each whetū in the Matariki cluster is associated with an aspect of wellbeing and the environment, as explained in this introductory article. We publish a new article each week, culminating with the 24 June 2022 rising of Matariki. Here’s a list of what we’ve published and what’s yet to come:
- Pōhutukawa – pressures on the environment
- Tupuānuku – land and soil
- Tupuārangi – land-based ecosystems
- Waitī – freshwater environments
- Waitā – ocean and marine conditions
- Waipunarangi – rains, frosts and climate (6 June)
- Ururangi – air, winds and the sky (13 June)
- Hiwa-i-te-rangi – future aspirations and actions (16 June)

We are also running a free PLD webinar, Te Kāhui o Matariki and the environment with the Ministry for the Environment on 16 June 2022.
Smart Water – kaitiakitanga through participation and action
The Hub has teamed up with Smart Water to foster an understanding and appreciation of water from the source to our taps. The suite of resources work together as a whole, but each activity also functions as a stand-alone resource so teachers can create a bespoke programme. Smart Water – a context for learning curates the activities, interactives and media.
