Student Activity - Drawing a contour map
Activity idea
With an average elevation of 2,600 metres and a highest peak of 5,140 m (compared to New Zealand’s Mount Cook which peaks at 3,749 m), Antarctica is the highest continent in the world.
Instructions
- Using the contour map, have students colour in the different regions.
- Ask them to draw a line across the map from one coast to another. They can choose any angle they wish but should cross the centre of Antarctica.
- From this ask them to draw a cross section. This will show them how the land changes giving them a two dimensional view. (A completed cross section is available as an example.)
