People on board
For eight weeks, 44 people will call the Research Vessel Tangaroa their home as they go on the International Polar Year (IPY) voyage to the Ross Sea in Antarctica. Making up the 44, are 18 crewmen, 24 scientists and two people from Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).
The crewmen include the ship’s officers: Captain, First Mate, Second Mate and an Ice Pilot - who takes charge of navigating the ship when there is ice in the water. They look after the smooth running of the ship, navigation and the ship’s safety. There are two engineers who keep the ship’s large diesel engines, electrical and water systems working. In the galley there are two cooks and a steward who are responsible for providing meals for everybody on board, no easy task with 44 hungry people! The deck crew are responsible for handling all the equipment on deck - deploying and retrieving the scientific instruments over the side of the ship and driving all the winches and cranes. There is also a doctor on board, which is important when the crew is so far from land.
The scientists on board have a wide range of scientific interests and have been split into a number of teams. The benthic team will be studying the organisms that live on the seafloor. The fish team who will be investigating the fish life in the Ross Sea is organised into two groups, one assessing the number of fish and the other who will be identifying the species of fish that are caught during the voyage. There will be a team who will be conducting research on the biodiversity of viruses, bacteria, phytoplankton and zooplankton - the really small organisms - that live in the water. There will also be three staff, whose job it is to look after all the electronic and computer equipment, including running the multibeam sounder that is used to map the seafloor. The scientific team members come from NIWA, Te Papa, Victoria University of Wellington and The University of Waikato. There is also one scientist from the United States and one from Italy.
LINZ personnel will include the LINZ representative who will be assisting the documentary and filmmaker from ‘Natural History New Zealand’.
