Slow slips

This animation demonstrates how slow slips work. The blue station in the middle of the animation is a global positioning unit which captures the subtle movement. Within the light blue area, rocks are heated and softened and slide easily past each other. The red area is called the interlocking interface. Here rocks tend to stick as there is more friction. The green area is called the transition zone. Here stress builds only slightly until being released.
