Print settings

All printers have different settings, and the width of the page you wish to print from the Hub could be outside the printable area, meaning some text is missed off. When you choose print in your browser, look for the properties or options dialogue box and choose 'scale to fit' or set 'scaling' at 85% – this will make the whole page fit to the printer paper size.

Screen settings

For optimal viewing of content: view at your screen's default zoom setting, i.e. 100% and with your window view maximised.

  • Firefox: select View > Zoom > Reset
  • Chrome: select View > Actual size
  • Safari: select View and zoom in or as required for optimum viewing
  • IE9: select Tools icon > Zoom (100%)
  • IE 7 & 8: select View> Zoom > Zoom (100%)

Machine screen resolution

Webpages will look best at an 1024 x 768 or above screen resolution. To change your screen to this resolution:

  • on a PC, go to the Control Panel and select Display > Settings > Screen resolution 1024 x 768 as a minimum requirement. We recommend you set it to the highest resolution you have in your computer.
  • on a Mac, select System preferences > Displays > Display and set the screen resolution to 1024 x 768 as a minimum requirement. We recommend you set it to the highest resolution you have in your computer.

Be aware that all other websites and programs you access from your computer may also be affected by this change.

Viewing website content

The Science Learning Hub contains a wide range of rich media content in formats such as PDF (file.pdf), Quicktime (file.mov), Flash (file.swf) or PowerPoint (file.ppt).

These formats require appropriate software to be installed on your computer. Should you have difficulty opening a file, ensure that you have the latest version of the following applications on your computer:

  • Adobe Acrobat Readerexternal link is required to read any document that ends with .pdf in the file name (this stands for portable document format).
  • QuickTimeexternal link will play MP3 and .mov files, on Windows and Macintosh computers.
  • Flash Playerexternal link 10.0 or above required to view the websites animations and interactives.
  • MS PowerPoint Viewerexternal link provides a downloadable PowerPoint viewer for those who may not have the PowerPoint application installed.

Please note: we recommend you ensure any files you download to your computer are first checked by your virus checker prior to opening.

Users of the Hub may also be interested in exploring the Open Officeexternal link suite of applications as an alternative way to view some of the content of the site.

Digital rights

The Science Learning Hub permits the download and use of content on certain conditions. To understand our digital rights policy please read and adhere to the website’s Terms and Conditions.

Bookmarking favourite pages

There are two ways to bookmark pages on the website:

    • Once you are a registered user of the website you can use our personalised bookmark feature. This means you can access your bookmarks from any computer and/or any browser, and they will never be lost when you upgrade your computer.
    • You can bookmark the website in your web browser, when you are on the page you want to bookmark, from your web browser menu, select Favourites>Add to Favourites or Bookmarks>Add to Bookmarks.

Using reCAPTCHA

We use reCAPTCHA to prevent spamming systems from completing our online forms. reCAPTCHA requires the user to interpret and type characters into a text box. It attempts to ensure a human, rather than a computer, is completing the form. reCAPTCHA has an audio alternative for visually impaired users.

Thinking tools

Users may have a problem logging in to the tools and/or playing the demo in some browsers due to cookie settings. If this is the case, please either use another browser or follow the instructions below:

Chrome

  1. Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
  2. Click Settings > Show advanced settings.
  3. In the ‘Privacy’ section, click ‘Content settings’.
  4. In the ‘Cookies’ section, select ‘Allow local data to be set (recommended)’.

Firefox

  1. Go to the Firefox button in the control bar.
  2. Click Options > Privacy
  3. Under ‘History’, set Firefox to ‘Use custom settings for history’.
  4. Select ‘Accept cookies from sites’ and ‘Accept third-party cookies’.

Internet Explorer

  1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button.
  • For IE7 & 8, click Internet Explorer.
  • For IE9, in the search box, type Internet Explorer, and then, in the list of results, click Internet Explorer.
  1. Click Tools > Internet options.
  2. Click the Privacy tab, and then, under Settings, move the slider to the top to block all cookies or to the bottom to allow all cookies, and then click OK.

Download warning

Users may get a warning message when opening a link within a downloaded document from the Science Learning Hub. If this happens please select OK to the question “Would you like to open this file?” This is standard internet behaviour that gives users an opportunity to confirm if they trust the source of the download.
