Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Canterbury

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Canterbury is a diverse department undertaking research across astronomy, the atmosphere, medical physics, theoretical physics, particle physics and nanotechnology.

The department participates in a wide range of local and international research collaborations, including the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) and the CERN large hadron collider projects.

The department has field stations at Mt John Observatory, where it manages New Zealand’s largest telescope, a radar facility at Birdlings Flat and a ring laser housed in the Cashmere Cavern, a formerly secret cave built during the Second World War.
