Ferns are plants of ancient origin. They are the green flowerless plants with divided leaves that often grow in damp, shady areas. Ferns have two separate independent living stages in their life cycle.
Scientists currently consider that New Zealand has approximately 230 species of fern in about 50 different genera. Botanists document the characteristics of these ferns for classification and identification.
